Prestigious Publications Add Weitz & Luxenberg to List of 2014 ‘Best Law Firms’
WASHINGTON (Nov. 1, 2013) – U.S. News & World Report and peer-review rankings guide Best Lawyers have named New York-based Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C. a top national law firm for 2014.
“Best Law Firms” recognition for Weitz & Luxenberg comes in the categories of Mass Tort Litigation/Class Actions—Plaintiffs (National Tier 1, New York Metropolitan Tier 1, and New Jersey Metropolitan Tier 1) and Personal Injury Litigation—Plaintiffs (New York Metropolitan Tier 3).
Weitz & Luxenberg landed a coveted spot on the “2014 Best Law Firms” roster after scoring exceptionally well in a gauge of its performance over the past year.
Among the performance factors propelling Weitz & Luxenberg onto the elite list was the firm’s lifetime verdicts-and-settlements record: approximately $7.5 billion obtained over the past quarter century for clients from all 50 states. The tally includes a New York record-breaking $190 million verdict awarded in 2013 to five blue-collar workers dead or dying of the asbestos-caused cancer mesothelioma (two received damages of $60 million apiece, another new high in the Empire State for this type of litigation).
To date, Weitz & Luxenberg has championed thousands of individuals afflicted by mesothelioma (as well as those suffering from other asbestos-spawned diseases). The firm also has played a pivotal role in establishing and overseeing many asbestos bankruptcy trusts, which account for a combined $30 billion earmarked to compensate victims of asbestos.
However, asbestos litigation (an area of law that Weitz & Luxenberg pioneered and almost singlehandedly shaped to its current contours) is not the only field in which the firm has made its mark. Weitz & Luxenberg also is prominent in its representation of clients harmed by drugs and medical devices, environmental and toxic torts, and acts of negligence (including medical malpractice, traumatic injuries, and accidents).
According to Best Lawyers and U.S. News & World Report, firms eligible for “Best Law Firms” status must have at least one attorney ranked in the companion listing, “Best Lawyers in America.” Weitz & Luxenberg boats six: Perry Weitz, cofounding member; Arthur Luxenberg, cofounding member; Robert J. Gordon, member; Jerry Kristal, managing attorney of the firm’s New Jersey office; Paul J. Pennock, chief of drug and medical device litigations; and Michael P. Roberts, asbestos litigation attorney.
These half-dozen consistently appear in the “Best Lawyers” lineup. Mr. Weitz, Mr. Gordon, Mr. Kristal, and Mr. Pennock first were named to it in 2006 and returned without fail every year thereafter. Likewise Mr. Luxenberg, beginning in 2008, and Mr. Roberts, since 2009. All six appear in the category of Mass Tort Litigation / Class Actions – Plaintiffs; however, Mr. Luxenberg is listed additionally in the category of Personal Injury Litigation – Plaintiffs.
“We’re humbled to stand among nation’s absolute finest plaintiffs’ law firms,” said Mr. Weitz, noting that Weitz & Luxenberg also owns the distinction of being the largest mass-tort and personal injury litigation law firm in Manhattan. “We’re exceptionally proud of our cutting-edge legal work, commitment to old-fashioned principles of hard work and integrity, and continuing insistence that each client be treated as if he or she is our only one.”
By placing on the “Best Law Firms” list as a National Tier 1 organization, Weitz & Luxenberg will enjoy an extra measure of recognition in the form of profile articles slated for soon-to-publish print- and web-editions of U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers.
