Recent news covers Actos warning: an increased risk of bladder cancer for long-term users
"I will ask my patients on Actos to consider dropping it and give them an alternative," said Dr. Albert Levy of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is just one of several doctors waiting to hear what new studies will conclude concerning Actos. Recent news from the FDA has indicated that Actos, a diabetes drug, carries an increased risk of bladder cancer for those using it for more than one year. More tests are being done to verify this information.
France and Germany recently made the decision to ban Actos because of a study conducted on roughly 1.5 million people treated between 2006 and 2009. The results of the study, which pointed to an increased risk of bladder cancer, prompted the European Medicines Agency to review the drug.
The United States is still deliberating on whether or not to remove the drug from the market.
Weitz & Luxenberg attorneys are currently investigating Actos and are open to hearing your stories about bladder cancer being caused by long-term use of the drug. Contact us today either by phone at (800) 476-6070, or online via the form on this page.
The medical community reacts to the recent news
Dr. Sue Kirkman, vice president of the American Diabetes Association’s medical affairs, said that there has been evidence linking Actos (“pioglitazone” in the generic) to bladder cancer prior to recent news, but the evidence was “conflicting, and hard to know whether this [was a] real problem or not.”
Dr. Kirkman indicated that many doctors she knows have already stopped prescribing this entire class of drugs. Despite this, she indicated that she is more worried about individuals abruptly stopping their Actos regimen after seeing the recent news.
Dr. David Nathan of Massachusetts General Hospital said that there are plenty of alternative ways to treat type 2 diabetes besides using Actos or the related Avandia drug. Dr. Nathan said that he doubts that "a potentially dangerous drug [Avandia], will replace [Actos] – another potentially harmful drug.”
