ALABAMA MESOTHELIOMA LAWYER

Alabama state death certificates show a concentration of asbestos-related mortalities centered around Birmingham and Mobile

There are several types of mesothelioma, and each is primarily caused by occupational asbestos exposure, a deadly condition that plagues workers in every state, including Alabama. According to an accomplished mesothelioma lawyer with the law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg, the most frequently diagnosed mesothelioma cancer type develops in the pleural lining of the lungs, and is called malignant pleural mesothelioma.

May 5, 2010 – Compared with other states in the country, Alabama ranks No. 19 for asbestos-related deaths, according to a mesothelioma lawyer with the personal injury law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg.

Citing data released by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit public information organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., the mesothelioma lawyer noted that most of the asbestos-related deaths are centered in the industrial urban hubs of Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama.

The lawyer said that the often-quoted EWG report took into account all asbestos deaths from mesothelioma or asbestosis as reported to the federal government through death certificate records from 1979 to 2001.

The report says at least 741 people have been killed by asbestos in Alabama during that period, with twice as many people dying from asbestosis (507 deaths) than from mesothelioma (248 to 410 deaths). But these figures, according to the report, “likely represent less than 20 percent of total asbestos mortality during that time.”

The Alabama data underestimates deaths from mesothelioma because mesothelioma was not tracked by the federal government as a cause of death until 1999, the report says.

When the government began tracking mesothelioma as a cause of death, U.S. mortality more than doubled, from 935 in 1998, to 2,343 in 1999.

Mesothelioma is the signature asbestos-related cancer and it is diagnosed in approximately 3,000 people every year in this country.
