Ambien was approved
by the FDA in 1992, and Ambien CR, the extended release tablet, was approved in
2005.
Ambien is referred to as a "Z-drug," along with zopiclone and
zaleplon; they comprise the new generation of the hypnotic drugs used to manage
insomnia. Z-drugs are preferred over other sleep aids because they are said to
produce fewer “hangover” side effects in the morning.
In 2004, doctors
wrote 24 million prescriptions for Ambien, and, in 2001, it was the most
commonly prescribed sleep agent for insomnia.
Few users, however, are
familiar with the adverse events related to Ambien. Those events have included
automobile accidents resulting from those who took Ambien before bedtime and
subsequently drove their cars while not fully awake.
To inform the public
of such dangerous potential behavior, the FDA ordered Sanofi-Aventis, maker of
Ambien, to strengthen its labeling information for the drug to include stronger
language on the risks.
