November 2, 2010 – Compared with other states in the country, Arizona ranks No. 28 for deaths attributed to worksite asbestos exposure and the lethal diseases it leads to: asbestosis and mesothelioma.
These statistics are based on an examination of U.S. death certificates recorded by the federal government between 1979 and 2001 and reviewed for a national study conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit public information organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
According to the organization’s report, most of the asbestos-related mortalities in Arizona are centered in and around the urban centers of Phoenix and Tucson. Both Arizona cities are in two state counties recording high rates of asbestos-related mortalities; so plagued are these counties that both are identified on the EWG’s list of the “Top 100 U.S. Counties For Asbestos-Related Mortalities.” Phoenix is in Maricopa County, ranked No. 20 on the list; and Tucson is in Pima County, ranked No. 87.
Arizona mesothelioma
The landmark study reports that asbestosis and mesothelioma killed up to 672 individuals in Arizona between 1979 and 2001. In Maricopa County, up to 376 individuals died in the same period, while in Arizona’s Pima County up to 148 residents died.
These death statistics, however, “likely represent less than 20 percent of total asbestos mortality during that time,” says the report, because “mesothelioma was not tracked by the federal government as a cause of death until 1999.” When the government began tracking mesothelioma as a cause of death, U.S. mortality from asbestos disease more than doubled in 1999 to 2,343 deaths, up from 935 recorded the previous year.
Most mesothelioma cases are diagnosed 30 years or more after worksite asbestos exposure. Asbestos is no longer mined in the United States, but it is still imported and used in construction and automotive products, like brakes and clutches. Large quantities of asbestos still remain in older public buildings and will eventually have to be removed.
