EPA to investigate arsenic in Lake County landfill
October 12, 2006
Lake County - The Associated Press explains, "The U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency has agreed to investigate a shuttered landfill
where high levels of methane, hydrogen cyanide, lead and arsenic have been
found."
Indiana residents are upset that the local government knew about
toxic dumping in 1975 and did nothing about it, but political figures insist
that it was done before there were any state regulations prohibiting the action
and that there hasn't been any proven dumping since.
Monitoring in recent
years "has not indicated any type of release occurring from the landfill site,"
said Bruce Palin, assistant commissioner for Indiana Department of Environmental
Management's Office of Land Quality.
