STEAM PIPING HAZARD
Poor condition of steam piping deemed an asbestos health hazard
The asbestos steam piping insulation was moderately friable (that is, in fair to poor condition) and was found in the main pipe chase. Additionally, there were asbestos-wrapped chilled water pipes in the main pipe chases and branches to the air handling units on each floor, all of which contributes to a human health hazard.
Despite the serious health problems linked to asbestos exposure, asbestos is still imported and used in the United States in situations that are similar to the above. The U.S. imported and used an estimated 1,820 tons of asbestos in 2007, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
In the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. This disease is most often the result of industrial workplace exposure to asbestos – and usually contracted through employers’ blatant disregard for the health and safety of their workers.
