Types of Asbestos

Asbestos Kills. There are Different Types of Asbestos

The different types of  asbestos are: tremolite, actinolite, chrysotile, anthophyllite, amosite and crocidolite. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral. It has been used in many products because of its physical properties. These include resistance to heat and electricity, flexibility and durability. Some products that contained asbestos are adhesives, ceiling tiles, brake pads, shingles, wall panels and insulation.

Tremolite can be found in ultramafic rock in the U.S., Europe and other regions. Its color can vary from brown to grey or white to green. Tremolite was used in products such as talcum powder but was not used in products as extensively as other types of asbestos.

Chrysotile is the most commonly found form of asbestos. It differs from other types of asbestos in that it has curled fibers. Other types of asbestos have straight fibers. This type of asbestos is white in color.

Actinolite asbestos has been used in home insulation products. It can be found in metamorphic rocks. Its color can be green, white or grey.

Anthophyllite asbestos is less common than other types of asbestos and can be found in countries such as Norway and Finland. It develops in ultramafic rocks and is dark brown. This type of asbestos has been used in cement tiles, insulation material and plumbing related products.

Amosite asbestos can be traced to Africa. It is also known as brown asbestos or Grunerite. Its commercial applications include cement sheet and pipe insulation.

Crocidolite asbestos can be found in Africa and Australia. It is also known as blue asbestos but can also be grey in color. It comprises about 4% of the asbestos that was used in the U.S. This type of asbestos was used to make cement products.

Asbestos exposure can lead to the development of cancers such as lung cancer and mesothelioma. Malignant mesothelioma claims the lives of about 3,000 people in the U.S. every year. It is the most aggressive type of asbestos cancer. Mesothelioma symptoms appear decades after asbestos exposure. The cancer can develop in the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), lining of the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma) and lining of the heart (pericardial mesothelioma).
