Air Sampling Programs: Health Effects from Fumes and Asbestos
Read the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) report about the health effects from the fumes to which miners are exposed. Miners are routinely exposed to carcinogenic dusts, including asbestos.
Metal fume fever is an illness caused by a brief, high exposure to generated fumes of metals such as zinc and magnesium. Symptoms appear from 4 to 12 hours after exposure and consist of fever and shaking chills.
Although complete recovery usually occurs within one day, an attack may recur with resumption of exposure after a period of no contact with the fume.
Pneumoconiosis caused by the inhalation of metal fumes can range from simple dust accumulation to nodular or interstitial fibrosis (lung scarring).
