What to expect with benign mesothelioma: symptoms, treatment, and legal options
In any form, mesothelioma is a dangerous disease. It is also an unjust one with which to be diagnosed. Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos was used heavily prior to the 1970’s when the general public was alerted to how deadly it is. The asbestos companies responsible for producing asbestos products had full knowledge that it was hazardous, but they chose to keep that information a secret in order to continue making profits (EWG 1).
Those asbestos companies are the reason you are sick today. If people like you had been aware how dangerous asbestos years ago, 10,000 Americans would not be dying each year from asbestos-related diseases (EWG 2).
Whether your mesothelioma is benign or malignant, it is a condition caused by a negligent company. Weitz & Luxenberg can help you pursue financial compensation from that negligent company (or companies). Compensation can help cover all of your medical expenses, lost income from lost work, and provide financial security.

What is benign mesothelioma?
The word “benign” means not harmful. Benign mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs where a tumor grows and then stops growing. The tumor is not expected to spread (NLM).
Symptoms of benign mesothelioma
Half of all cases of benign mesothelioma are non-symptomatic (patients experience no symptoms). Shortness of breath is a possible symptom if the tumor is putting pressure on the lungs. A condition called pleural effusion, where fluid collects in the lining of the lungs, is also a possible symptom (NLM).
Treatment options for benign mesothelioma
Means of removal of the tumor varies. It is best to discuss with your health care provider the best method. In other forms of cancer, the methods of shrinking or removing tumors involve:
- Surgery
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
Usually, either one or several of said methods are used in conjunction with each other.
Possible complications
Depending on where in your body the benign tumor is, it can still cause possible complications. In addition, benign tumors have the possibility of becoming malignant (MDGuidelines).
What are my legal options with benign mesothelioma?
Even though your mesothelioma may be benign, you still have the option to pursue financial compensation. Benign mesothelioma can come back, and must be watched carefully by your health care provider (NLM). Financial compensation can cover all the costs of hospital visits, surgeries, travel costs, and more.
