According to an article in today's New York Daily News, dangerous
levels of explosive methane vapors in shallow soil near the massive Greenpoint,
Brooklyn oil spill have prompted state officials to do emergency gas testing in
nearby homes.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation is
reportedly urging Greenpoint dwellers to sign up to have their homes inspected
for the dangerous vapors.
Testing has thus far found high readings on
benzene, which can cause cancer, said the report.
