Environmental Threat near Ironton, Ohio Superfund Site Includes Benzene Exposure
July 18, 2007
A former tar plant in South Ironton, OH was listed as a Superfund site years ago. The EPA has been involved in its cleanup, and it, along with Honeywell International, the owners of the land, are currently working on phase three of the clean up, and working out its budget.
According to the EPA, as quoted in www.herald-dispatch.com, "Scientists who studied the situation concluded a person in direct contact with soil in certain parts of the site over a lifetime could face a higher risk of developing cancer." Among the chemicals found were PAH's, arsenic, benzene, and toluene.
The plan to eliminate the environmental danger includes "covering contaminated soil with an engineered landfill cap" and digging polluted sediment out of the river in order to transfer it to an off-site landfill.
