Onondaga Lake in Northwest Syracuse, NY, has been a dumping ground for pollutants for nearly a century. In the first half of the century, it was deemed unsafe for swimming, and by the 1970's, fishing was no longer permitted there.

Honeywell Inc., the company currently operating in the area, has pledged $451 million for the clean up.

Among the contaminants discovered in the lake, according to a 2002 investigation, were mercury, benzene, toluene, PCBs and polychlorinated dioxins.

The bulk of the pollution was caused by the former chemical company, Allied-Signal.
