NEWS BREAK
December 10, 2009 - Students and teachers at Lafayette High School in Brooklyn may have been exposed to asbestos Saturday when a school contractor improperly removed asbestos-insulated piping in the school building basement.
With dozens of students left standing outside in the rain, Lafayette High School officials made the last-minute decision to cancel SAT tests and classes on Saturday for further evaluation.
Early Friday morning, a school custodian reported seeing dust and debris in the basement, but representatives from the School Construction Authority reportedly didn’t arrive to evaluate the situation until 2 p.m.
“Though air tests released Saturday morning indicated that conditions at Lafayette High School were safe, the College Board decided to cancel Saturday morning’s SAT,” a spokesman for the Education Department confirmed.

According to newspaper reports, a school contractor disassembled piping wrapped in asbestos insulation and carried it through the hallways of the school near the cafeteria Thursday. Teachers say almost all the students and most of the school’s staff walked through the affected basement corridor Friday.
Education Department officials said that additional air quality tests indicated the building was safe and that the school would reopen Monday morning. More tests are scheduled.
The truth about asbestos
Asbestos is a building and insulation material that was widely used in 20th century construction. It is a serious health risk for those who work in construction or building renovation projects.
Although asbestos is heatproof, flame-resistant, strong and durable, and therefore useful in a number of applications, it is also a known carcinogen and can lead to mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that kills some 3,000 Americans every year.
