LATEST NEWS UPDATE:
June 22, 2009 – Investigators have concluded that the staff of a city-run hospital in Brooklyn failed to provide basic medical care to an emergency room patient who died last year on a waiting room floor after being ignored for more than 24 hours.
The staff then tried to cover up their neglect, according to the city’s Department of Investigation, which released its report on Friday, one year after the death of the patient, Esmin Green, in Kings County Hospital Center’s psychiatric emergency room.
At the end of her long wait for medical attention, Ms. Green, a 49-year-old Jamaican immigrant and the mother of six children, collapsed, unnoticed, from a blood clot and died. A security video released by the New York Civil Liberties Union and other lawyers after her death showed Ms. Green on the floor, while hospital workers continued to do nothing to help her.
Brooklyn hospital settlement. Ms. Green’s death prompted a series of reforms at the hospital, and in May, the city settled a lawsuit with her family for $2 million.
