The American Brass Company: New Haven, CT
The American Brass Company, which was active from 1893 to 1960, “was the first large brass manufacturing plant in the United States, and for much of its existence was the largest brass manufacturer in the country.” (Google Books) Many of the employees were exposed to asbestos during their careers, but the symptoms of their asbestos related illnesses did not arise until 20-50 years after their first exposure. Please contact Weitz & Luxenberg if you ever worked for The American Brass Company of Connecticut.
The New London Submarine Base: Groton, CT
Were you ever employed at the New London Submarine Base? Both Navy yards and Navy ships were inundated with asbestos, not just in temperature sensitive areas such as engine and boiler rooms, but in sleeping quarters and even mess halls. This made exposure to asbestos not just possible, but inevitable.
The New London Submarine Base was one of the largest bases of its kind in the world. It oversaw the construction and launch of the USS Nautilus, “the first nuclear powered ship commissioned by the United States Navy.” (USS Nautilus) From World War I onwards, New London served as a naval training and education facility. Unfortunately, many Navy personnel developed mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer and asbestosis after having served in the Navy. It is estimated that “one third of the people in the United States” (PR Web) who are currently battling an asbestos related disease spent time in the Navy.
The New London Submarine Base was almost closed in August 2005, but was spared after it was found that its closing “would hurt current and future mission capabilities, as well as the readiness of the total U.S military.” (Aviation Week) In spite of the traces of asbestos which remain in some of its facilities, the New London Submarine Base remains in full operation to this day.
Mystic Shipyard: Mystic, CT
The Mystic Shipyard “first opened its doors in 1843, and at that time it served almost exclusively as a site for the construction of schooners and iron clad ships. That changed around the turn of the 20thcentury when the shipyard became a place to build pleasure yachts.” (Company Database)
The Mystic Shipyard was known for the construction of two major vessels:
Jennie R. Dubois:
This vessel, built in 1902, “was a five-- masted, 249 foot coastal schooner that was the largest of its kind built at the Mystic shipyard. She worked on the Thames River (not to be confused with the river in England) for about two years, before being unintentionally rammed and sunk by a German steamship.” (Company Database)
Andrew Jackson:
This vessel, built in 1860, “successfully navigated around the Tierra de Fuego to San Francisco in record time- eighty nine days and four hours.” (Google Books) Like many of the vessels constructed at the Mystic Ship Yard, the Jackson was rife with asbestos.
