DES CANCER
Women whose mothers took DES face cancer risk
A new large-scale study in the United States has found that women whose mothers took Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen, while pregnant have nearly twice the risk of developing breast cancer. The findings, published in the August 2006 issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, mirror earlier studies on DES and the risk of developing cancer.
Boston University’s School of Public Health compared women exposed to DES in utero to a group of similarly aged women who were not exposed to the drug. The study found that the risk of breast cancer was about twice as high in women exposed to the drug compared with those who were not.
DES Cancer
DES was prescribed from 1938 through 1971 to prevent miscarriage. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advised doctors to stop prescribing it because it was linked to vaginal and cervical cancer in the daughters of the women who took DES while pregnant (now known simply as “DES Daughters”). According to the Center for Disease Control, being a DES Daughter also increases your risk of reproductive tract defects, such as a T-shaped uterus, infertility and pregnancy complications, such as ectopic pregnancy or pre-term birth.
