Study Finds Bike Helmets can be Dangerous Products
September 19, 2006, New York Times
According to a British study, wearing a bike helmet product while bicycling may at times be more dangerous than not wearing one.
A psychology professor at the University of Bath used himself as a test subject in studying how closely cars drive near bicyclists.
He fitted himself with a concealed video camera and ultrasonic sensor, which measured the distance between his bicycle and cars that passed him.
He found that cars were more likely to pass closer to him when he was wearing a helmet. He was actually hit twice during the study--both times he was wearing a helmet.
The study will appear in Accidents and Analysis and Prevention.
