Defibrillator: The Danger Risks of Ventricular Fibrillation

BREAKING NEWS: 10.15.07--Medtronic, Inc., the world's largest maker of electronic heart devices, announced they are suspending sales of Sprint Fidelis leads. According to the FDA, these wires, used to connect defibrillators to the heart, may break or erode and may increase chance of injury. Learn more about the Medtronic Sprint Fidelis Recall.

Those concerned with the danger posed by a defibrillator should read the following information. To summarize, ventricular fibrillation is a sudden lethal arrhythmia responsible for countless deaths in the western world generally in the setting of ischaemic heart disease.

Despite considerable dilgent work, the underlying nature of fibrillation is not fully understood. Although, most episodes of fibrillation occur in unhealthy hearts, some occur in so-called "normal hearts."

Theories of ventricular fibrillation generation and maintenance need to account for both. The multiple wandering wavelet theory and further alterations to those discussed above are not mutually exclusive. Most studies showing wandering wavelets are focused on a relatively small areas of myocardium and are limited to surface measurements and more or less show the micro-electrophysiological conditions.

The theories advanced by Winfree and Panfilov are based on experimental observations and more so on computer modelling and describe ventricular fibrillation more on a macro-electrophysiological level.

Evidently, further comprehensive understanding of the causes of ventricular fibrillation initiation and maintenance can only help in the fight to find better therapeutic approaches to prevent the onset of ventricular fibrillation and to terminate the ongoing process by immediate defibrillation.
