DePuy Hip Replacement Recall

Johnson & Johnson issues recall of two DePuy hip replacement devices

The DePuy Orthopaedics unit of Johnson & Johnson has announced that it will recall a hip replacement implant it manufactures because more than 10 percent of patients who received the device required a second hip replacement after the company’s devices had failed – requiring expensive and painful operations to replace them. DePuy said it will recall two ASR hip implant devices: the ASR XL Acetabular System, a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement (and distributed worldwide), and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, a partial hip replacement that involves placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur (approved for use in countries outside the United States).

Some 93,000 of these devices have been implanted worldwide, according to a DePuy spokesperson. Since 2008, the FDA said it has received about 400 complaints from patients in the United States who received DePuy hip replacement devices.

The high early failure rate of the DePuy ASR implants was reported this year in a series of New York Times articles. These devices reportedly have come under scrutiny over the last few years “because they are part of a category of implants called metal-on-metal bearings, which can generate debris from wear, causing inflammation and tissue damage in certain patients.”

According to The New York Times, many medical centers in the United States that specialize in joint replacement surgery have already noticed a high failure rate with the DePuy hip implants. A statement from DePuy reported that 12 to 13 percent of patients needed a second hip replacement within five years of receiving an ASR device.

Legal options for injured hip replacement patients

Hip replacement is surgery for people with severe hip damage. Unfortunately, certain hip replacement devices are defective, causing patients pain. When this happens, greater medical problems can result and expensive corrective surgery may be required. Therefore, it can be helpful, both financially and physically, for people suffering from defective hip replacement devices to inquire about their legal rights to a DePuy hip implant lawsuit concerning the DePuy hip recall to determine whether they are entitled to compensation under the law.

Weitz & Luxenberg has built a reputation as one of the country's foremost medical device law firms, helping thousands of people receive financial compensation for their injuries.
