Weitz & Luxenberg hosts Q&A session 09/27/2011 with Duncan, OK perchlorate contamination victims
New York-based personal injury law firm to discuss status of claims against admitted responsible party Halliburton
Personal injury lawyers from the New York-based law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg tonight will update residents of Duncan, Okla., on the status of claims against defense contractor Halliburton, which earlier admitted contaminating the city’s drinking water with spent missile fuel.
Duncan residents harmed by Halliburton’s wrongful act can get answers to their questions from Weitz & Luxenberg beginning at 6 p.m. (Central time) in the Simmons Center, Chisholm Trail Hall, 800 Chisholm Trail Parkway.
Problems surfaced for the people of Duncan even before Halliburton, headquartered in Houston, announced it had discovered perchlorate contamination in 18 residential water wells near a site along Osage Road on the city’s north side, where the company once conducted tests of missile components.
Halliburton afterward offered to supply affected residents with bottled drinking water and promised to reimburse them for any medical expenses incurred, according to published newspaper accounts. Perchlorate is not known to cause cancer, but it can disrupt thyroid production of hormones necessary for growth and development, and it can interfere with metabolism as well as adult mental function.
Ironically, Duncan is the birthplace of Halliburton. The company was founded there by Erle P. Halliburton, who early in the 20thCentury devised a way to build better oil wells and, in the process, make oil production more cost-effective. A statute in tribute to Erle Halliburton dominates a corner of the city’s Memorial Park.
With a population of about 23,000, the city of Duncan – seat of Stephens County – is ringed by a quartet of lakes, but many Duncan residents get their drinking water from wells, including those tainted by perchlorate.
Polluted water seemingly everywhere
Sadly, what happened in Duncan is far from an isolated incident, according to research by The New York Times.
In recent years, the paper says, drinking-water safety laws have been flouted by polluters more than half a million times, resulting in an estimated one in 10 Americans exposed to dangerous chemicals or contaminants with each turn of the tap.
Among the pollutants flowing through pipes into homes, schools and workplaces are those linked to cancer, birth defects and neurological disorders, The Times reports. But, adds the paper, many water users have no clue they are drinking or bathing in tainted H2O because most water pollution nowadays lacks odor or taste.
In some cases, people get sick immediately. In others, it takes years before health problems materialize, The Times offered.
