EPA unveils its own most-wanted list
December 11, 2008 -- The FBI has one. Now the EPA does, too.
In its own version of the FBI’s most-wanted list, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a rogue’s list of the 23 most-wanted environmental fugitives, complete with mug shots and descriptions of their crimes against the environment.
A top EPA enforcement official said the people on the list represent the “brazen universe of people that are evading the law.” Many of these characters face stiff prison sentences and huge financial fines. The government wants help in tracking them down.
One fugitive is John Karayannides, who reportedly dumped 487 tons of wheat tainted with diesel fuel into the South China Sea in 1998.
Another of EPAs most-wanted figures is Raul Chavez-Beltran, formerly of El Paso, Tex., who is charged with transporting and disposing large volumes of hazardous waste, including mercury-laced soil from an environmental spill.
The EPA’s most-wanted list can be interpreted as a fresh start for the agency. It comes at a time when its criminal enforcement activities have slackened. In fiscal year 2008, the EPA prosecuted only 176 defendants - the least number of cases in five years.
