FLORIDA CHINESE DRYWALL
Chinese drywall is found safe and asbestos free
Fears have been raised in the Florida construction industry that Chinese drywall might contain asbestos, a fibrous mineral that can cause mesothelioma and other cancers if inhaled or ingested by construction workers. Although identified as defective, Florida Chinese drywall does not contain asbestos.
The attorneys at the personal injury law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg have decades of experience defending victims’ rights in practice areas that include: accidents/general injury, dangerous drugs, medical malpractice, and environmental pollutants.
News Brief
November 20, 2009 - According to a recent two-day symposium held in Florida and hosted by the state department of health and the University of Florida, there is no evidence that Chinese drywall contains asbestos.
Before 1980, Sheetrock and drywall products were manufactured in the United States containing some 10 percent in asbestos to help strengthen and fireproof the boards.
Asbestos is being phased out of drywall products manufactured domestically because it can lead to fatal illnesses like mesothelioma. But the health threat to construction workers still lingers, especially during building demolitions or renovations in buildings constructed before 1980.
Though lacking asbestos containing materials, Chinese drywall imported between 2004 and 2007 releases a malodorous compound that is corrosive to pipes, wiring, and air-conditioning coils, according to the symposium.
It was assumed that such caustic fumes must pose a risk to human health, but the symposium concluded that line of thinking was incorrect.
