Pharmaceutical exec says FDA too overwhelmed to ensure blood thinner Heparin is not contaminated

August 5, 2008 – Billionaire pharmaceutical executive Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong valiantly helped relieve a severe shortage of the nation's most popular blood thinner heparin after its primary manufacturer recalled half of the nation’s supply in response to reports of patient deaths from contaminated shipments.

He is now calling for reforms to how the pharmaceutical industry safeguards its products, and told ABC News that the FDA is too overwhelmed by the international situation to ensure adequate product safety. Drug manufacturing companies must assume much of the responsibility for product safety, he said.

The FDA reports that at least 55 people may have died from contaminated heparin. Baxter, heparin’s former manufacturer, said that this year it has received 955 reports of contamination.

The raw ingredient for heparin comes from China, and it was there, at unmonitored factories, where a crude, poisonous counterfeit was added to the manufacturing process to increase local profit margins, the FDA reported after conducting an international investigation.
