Rare Testing Reveals Heparin Problems
Heparin, the blood thinner now linked to 19 deaths and 785 serious illnesses, contains a mimicking ingredient that possibly led to adverse reactions. Testing failed to distinguish the contaminant from the Heparin. Only after magnetic resonance imaging – not usually performed – was it revealed that as much as 20 percent of the product uses a Heparin counterfeit.
Heparin is made from pig intestines and in some cases the raw form is produced in unregulated workshops in China. It is still unknown whether the tampering was intentional or accidental. Moreover, it is still unproven as to whether or not the root cause of the problem is in fact the Chinese factories.
