The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has requested that Merck & Co. revise the prescribing information of Janumet and Januvia, to cite reported side effects of acute pancreatitis in certain patients using these products.
The FDA has informed the medical community that it received at least 88 reports of acute pancreatitis from patients using the diabetes drugs: Januvia (sitagliptin) and Janumet (sitagliptin/metformin).
These reports were received between October 16, 2006 and February 9, 2009. Hospitalization was necessary for 58 patients (66 percent), four of whom were admitted to the intensive care unit, according to the FDA.
In 19 cases (21 percent), pancreatitis occurred within 30 days of starting Janumet or Januvia; and 47 cases (53 percent) resolved once sitagliptin was discontinued, the FDA reported.
