Januvia and Janumet diabetes drugs may
cause side effects such as pancreatitis
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck & Co. to revise its prescribing information for two diabetes drugs – Januvia and Janumet – after receiving 88 reports of serious side effects, including pancreatitis, in patients who used the drugs. Pancreatitis can lead to life-threatening illnesses.

Januvia side effects
January 18, 2010 – The FDA recently
issued a warning to patients and healthcare professionals that it received
reports of 88 cases of acute pancreatitis from patients using Merck& Co.
diabetic drugs: Januvia (sitagliptin) and Janumet (sitagliptin/metformin).

These symptoms were present in the 88 patients who reported using Januvia or Janumet in the treatment of their diabetes, and who later developed pancreatitis. Four patients were admitted to an intensive care unit and 66 percent required hospitalization.
Pancreatitis can also lead to death. In cases of necrotizing pancreatitus, for example, the pancreatic tissue begins to die and abdominal bleeding can occur. No deaths have been reported, as yet.
“Because acute pancreatitis is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality, and early recognition is important in reducing adverse health outcomes,” the FDA said. Merck & Co. has been told to revise its prescribing information for Januvia and Janumet so that these occurrences of pancreatitis are reported in the warning.
