A barrier that kept sludge contained at the Kingston Fossil Coal Plant in Tennessee has failed, spilling millions of gallons of waste, reported the CNN cable network on December 23. Some residents are considering an environmental lawsuit.
The Environmental Protection Agency expects the cleanup of the waste to take over a month.
The waste material--comprised of ash from the plant's coal--broke through its contained area at the Tennessee Valley Authority's power plant in Kingston, about 40 miles east of Knoxville, CNN said.
Reportedly, the sludge from the Kingston Fossil Plant damaged over a dozen homes, required a mass evacuation of residents, and resulted in three houses being determined to be uninhabitable.
According to the news report, the Kingston Fossil Plant sits on a tributary of the Tennessee River called the Clinch River.
Residents are now worried that more sludge will enter the water supply.
