Much like the BP Oil Spill, the effects of the Yellowstone River Oil Spill May Be Felt For Some Time Yet
The BP Oil Spill that occurred on April 20th, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. Although that was a far worse disaster in terms of the amount of oil spilled, many of the consequences are the same:
Health: The potent fumes of the oil spill caused “breathing problems, dizziness and fainting spells” (Daily Mail) in a number of people. One Montana resident told the Daily Mail: “My mother suffers from a respiratory condition and passed out several times as we evacuated the house. All her clothes, the suitcase- everything smelled like solid crude oil.”
Environmental: Ecological officials are worried that “birds, fish and mammals downstream of the Yellowstone River may be impacted.” (Daily Mail) Because the river was already flooded prior to the spill, “thousands of gallons of oil will be dispersed over the earth.” (Daily Mail)
Economic: Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer expressed concern over the welfare of the local fishing industry, stating that “oil cannot be dumped into a pristine trout stream without causing damage to the fisheries.” (AOL News) Moreover, Farmers who depend on their livestock and crops to sustain their livelihoods have complained that the high levels of oil saturated water have poisoned their property.
