Why did he choose to be a mesothelioma lawyer? Well, he'd rather tell you himself. Watch the video
Leonard F. Feldman is currently the head of asbestos litigation at Weitz & Luxenberg’s New Jersey office, which handles cases throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He is an experienced trial attorney who has worked exclusively on cases involving asbestos-related lung disease since he joined the Cherry Hill Office in 2009.
Since 1999, Feldman has represented plaintiffs harmed by asbestos exposure in hundreds of mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis cases. He uses his extensive experience in this field to represent those harmed from asbestos, and he has achieved excellent results over the years, with many cases reaching 7-figure settlements or verdicts.
According to Feldman, “Our typical client is a man who has worked his whole life to provide for his family – he didn’t do anything wrong, and yet he ends up with this awful disease. We know that every one of our clients would trade whatever money we get for him in exchange for his good health back, and we know that money can never fully compensate him for his loss. But often a client will tell us that it is a great comfort to him, knowing that even though he is sick, he is still providing for his family – through the settlements and verdicts we get on his behalf. Our team is motivated every day to make sure that our client’s lifetime efforts to support his family are not in vain.”
Feldman is involved in every step of the litigation, including: interviewing the client at the start of the case, often in his home; preparing the complaint for court; taking depositions; negotiating with opposing counsel; and litigating the case in court. His relationship with experts in this field assures a relevant knowledge base on the most recent advances in mesothelioma and asbestos-related diseases, and his close working relationship with medical experts often helps his clients get the best medical care available.
Since his arrival at Weitz & Luxenberg, Feldman has obtained millions of dollars for his clients.
One notable case involved Feldman’s representation of Antonio Lucas, an immigrant to the United States from Central America. Lucas had come to the United States in the 1960s, worked for 40 years in a factory to support his family, and in 2008 he was nearing retirement and was close to achieving the American Dream. Lucas learned that he had mesothelioma, and that most of the suppliers of the asbestos to which he had been exposed were now bankrupt, which might limit his monetary recovery. Feldman and the team at W&L were able to take a few photographs that Lucas had taken of the plant and figure out one defendant which might be held responsible for the harm Lucas had suffered, and within 12 months turned those pictures into a large settlement. The Lucas family is grateful for the financial security Feldman helped secure for them.
For Len, his clients aren’t just files to re-shelve once the work is done. Going through this process, he becomes a part of their lives. Len worked with Bob and Gayle Szczesny after Bob was diagnosed with asbestos lung cancer. He guided them through their case, and obtained a favorable settlement for them while taking care not to put any undue strain on them in their time of grief.
After the case was over, Gayle Szczesny wrote Feldman a note, saying: “I wanted to thank you for all your help and to relay to you that both Bob and I have appreciated your hard work and effort in pursuing our case. You're a very honest and admirable person and we couldn't have wished for anyone better.”
Feldman began his legal career working as an Assistant District Attorney in Norristown, PA, prosecuting hundreds of major crimes such as fraud, robbery, and homicide. He conducted dozens of jury and waiver trials, and handled select preliminary hearings and pretrial matters. In 1996, he was appointed Chief of the Montgomery County Insurance Fraud Unit in PA. He moved to civil practice in 1999, working mostly asbestos cases, but also automobile accidents, real estate, and medical malpractice cases, including surgical errors, delay in diagnosis of cancer, and catastrophic injury to newborns.
He is a member in good standing of the New Jersey bar and the Pennsylvania bar. He received his law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1993, where he served as an editor of The Business Lawyer, a journal published by the American Bar Association (ABA). He holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.
In keeping with Weitz & Luxenberg’s history of community and nonprofit work, Mr. Feldman is a longtime and active member of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. He also previously served as the Executive Director of the American Interfaith Institute. Mr. Feldman enjoys coaching his sons in Little League baseball, and he continues to play sports himself – schedule and health permitting.
