LONG BEACH NAVAL SHIPYARD
The Long Beach Naval Shipyard in California was a hotbed for asbestos exposure and fatal diseases during WWII.
June 21, 2010 – Asbestos was the insulation material of choice in the production and repair of Navy warships built at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard in California and other shipyard facilities during WWII. Asbestos, applied everywhere below deck, was chosen to help prevent fire at sea during combat engagements.
It wasn’t until after the war that the public began to recognize asbestos as a carcinogen that can lead to fatal diseases, such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis.
Health agencies estimate that more than 100,000 shipyard workers employed during the World War II years died as the result of asbestos exposure, which was integrated into many products used in the shipbuilding industry.

Weitz & Luxenberg
The Asbestos Litigation Unit at Weitz & Luxenberg has obtained record-breaking verdicts and settlements for asbestos-injured shipyard workers for nearly 25 years.
The firm’s impressive history is rooted in a landmark trial that involved 36 retired Brooklyn Navy Yard workers in New York who were diagnosed with mesothelioma, and other fatal asbestos-related diseases linked to occupational asbestos exposure.
In that landmark case, Weitz & Luxenberg obtained $75 million for Navy shipyard veterans, most of whom died from their illnesses. In those cases, surviving family members received the awards.
Weitz & Luxenberg continues to obtain similar verdicts and settlements for other maritime workers diagnosed with mesothelioma – the signature asbestos-related cancer that has plagued shipyard workers for decades.
