Did you work in an Industrial environment in Louisiana such one of the Bollinger Shipyards?
Bollinger Shipyards Inc., which consists of 12 different sites in Louisiana and Texas was first established in 1946. The locations allowed “unrestricted access to the central Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River.” It was one of the leaders of the shipbuilding industry in the United States, “owing to its military vessel construction and repair experience and its long standing commitment to continuous improvement.” (Bollinger Shipyards Inc.)
Unfortunately, Bollinger Shipyards, like all shipyards contained asbestos in some capacity. It was virtually inescapable and although it was most frequently found in temperature sensitive areas, such as engine rooms, it could also be found in dormitories and even mess halls. The ships constructed by Bollinger employees also contained asbestos in a number of different areas. Asbestos was used in the production of gaskets, deck covers, adhesives, felts and meters, among other gadgets and devices.
The exact amount of asbestos exposure is of little consequence; even the slightest amount could have contributed to your mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer or asbestosis.
Avondale Shipyards, New Orleans, LA:
Founded in 1938, Avondale Shipyard is “located on the west bank of the Mississippi River in New Orleans.” (Ship Building History)
Initially, Avondale “built tugs and barges but when the war effort started, it expanded to build small cargo ships for the Maritime Commission. After the war, it expanded to its present site and to a repair yard on the Harvey Canal. In 1959, the original owners sold it to Ogden Corporation for $14 million and it became Avondale Shipyards. In 1985 Ogden sold it, together with a number of other Ogden interests, to an ESOP called Connell Partnership and the new group became Avondale Industries. There were major clashes of personalities between the shipyard's management and Connell's management, however, and in 1987 the shipyard was spun off from the rest of the group as Avondale Industries.” (Ship Building History)
