MALCOLM McLAREN OBIT
English punk rock band manager dies from asbestos-related mesothelioma
April 12, 2010 - The former band manager for both the American rock group
“New York Dolls,” and the English punk group, “The Sex Pistols,” died last week
from mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs
caused by occupational asbestos
exposure.
The deceased, Malcolm McLaren, 64, reportedly was exposed
to asbestos in his London shop, which was constructed with asbestos boards before the enactment of
work-site asbestos regulations in the 1980s.
McLaren reportedly performed unusual renovations on the premises, including busting a large hole in the ceiling, and leaving it like that to make the shop look as if it had been bombed.
Renovation work involving the demolition of out-of-date asbestos construction materials is known to release asbestos fibers into the air, where they can be inhaled into lung tissue. Inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers is the most common avenue for work-site asbestos exposure.
Mesothelioma cancer can take decades to develop and is primarily caused by occupational asbestos exposure. Retired workers from the construction, automotive and maritime industries make up the vast majority of mesothelioma cases today.
Malcolm McLaren died under care in a Switzerland clinic, but his body was returned to London for burial. McLaren introduced The Sex Pistols to the United States in 1976.
Though mesothelioma is considered a rare disease, the World Health Organization estimates that about 90,000 individuals worldwide die from mesothelioma every year. Some 3,000 cases are diagnosed in the U.S. annually.
