January 14, 2010 — Weitz & Luxenberg environmental attorneys have received health complaints from residents of Marcus Hook, Pa., who report serious lung illnesses they believe are associated with toxic air emissions from local oil refineries.
These residents have been diagnosed with “sarcoidosis of the lungs,” after exhibiting known symptoms such as chronic coughing, headaches and fatigue. Though the exact cause of sarcoidosis is unknown, it is believed to be caused through an alteration in the immune response after exposure to an environmental, occupational, or infectious agent.
Background
Officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection this month fined Sunoco Marcus Hook $173,000 in civil penalties for several toxic air emission releases that occurred in 2008. State officials said the illegal emissions occurred in May, June and December of that year, and prompted a large number of odor complaints and residential damage claims. Other oil refineries in the area include ConocoPhillips.
What exactly is sarcoidosis?
Sarcoidosis is a respiratory and dermatological disease that is usually “asymptomatic,” which means there are no outward signs of illness. When symptoms do appear, they can include: shortness of breath, a dry cough, skin rashes, or inflammation in the eye. Sometimes, a person with sarcoidosis complains of feeling sick and may experience fever or weight loss.
Pulmonary infiltration can lead to lung fibrosis which causes the lungs to stiffen, making it difficult to breathe. Unfortunately, fibrosis is irreversible. If extensive, it can cause severe dysfunction and, at its worse, can lead to heart failure.
The best way to diagnose sarcoidosis of the lungs is to schedule an X-ray examination with your doctor.
