Bethlehem Shipbuilding, Sparrows Point, MD
The origins of Bethlehem Shipbuilding date back to 1887, and it first formally “began building ships in 1891.” (Ship Building History) It was a “major merchant shipbuilder” (Ship Building History) during World War II, World War II and all the way through to 1986, when new construction of ships there ceased.
The vessels constructed at Bethlehem were often utilized by the US Navy. Some ship models, such as battleships and destroyers, actively participated in battle, others served as maritime hospitals tending to wounded and dying sailors, and still others were responsible for transporting food and equipment to sailors and other persons stranded at sea. Bethlehem was instrumental in helping to fortify American war efforts.
Asbestos was valued for its corrosion and fire proof properties and was ubiquitous in virtually every area of the naval ships, from the sleeping quarters, to the engine rooms, to the mess halls. It was also included in and around temperature sensitive areas such as engine and boiler rooms, and was used in the production of gaskets, deck covers, adhesives, felts and meters, among other gadgets and devices. For a shipbuilder who spent weeks, months and sometimes years at a time building a ship, his exposure to asbestos was almost a guarantee.
Important ships built at Bethlehem Shipbuilding:
USS Calvert: The USS Calvert was a destroyer commissioned during World War II. She earned eight battle stars for her numerous military contributions.
USS Severn: The USS Severn was constructed in 1943 and was formally launched on May 31st1944. She was deactivated in January 1950 and sold in January 1975.
