Alabama- Commission approves new mercury rules

October 6, 2006

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management has instituted new air regulations, reducing the amount of mercury allowed in the air.

This will be a relief to local residents who had, until now, been advised to avoid eating seafood from nineteen of the state's waterways.

The new rules, which should begin to take affect shortly, will impact Alabama's nine coal-fired power plants, and potentially reduce emissions by seventy percent.
