Mercury in Groundwater can Contaminate Oceans Says Massachussets based group
March 22,2007
The Massachussets-based Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution (WHOI) has disovered that mercury pollution in groundwater could
lead to pollution of entire oceans. While scientists used to believe that
atmospheric and river sources were responsible for carrying inland pollution to
the oceans, these researchers now believe that groundwater is also a dangerous
conduit.
Previously,it was believed that mercury pollution comes mostly
from industrial emissions to the atmosphere such as coal burning. From the air,
mercury particles then mix with rain or snow onto the land or directly into the
oceans. IN addition, deposits of mercury find their way into the oceans in
runoff from streams and rivers. They then build up in sediment on the shoreline.
