Pt. Huron Michigan Residents Learn About DTE's Mercury Emission Prevention System
May 14,2007
Residents in Pt. Huron, Michigan are excited to learn that DTE Engergy, a Canadian based company, has successfully
tested a new system that significantly reduces mercury emissions. However,
because this new system is expensive to install and run, they are opting not to
use it at this time. Since Canada has no federal Mercury emission laws, the
company has no legal obligation to do so. (Such a law however, will come into
effect in 2010).
Scott Edwards, a Canadian environmentalist sued DTE on
the grounds that its mercury emissions are causing considerable harm to fish
habitats in the St. Clair River and violating Canada's Fisheries Act.
Furthermore, Michigan residents are taking notice of this issue because both the
U.S. and Canada "share a stake in defending the River's Health."
