Board endorses Montana mercury rule
October 11, 2006
A rule has been passed in Montana that would limit
mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants.
There is a debate
regarding two different types of coal, one which produces more mercury than the
other. Some argue that it wouldn't be necessary to reduce the emissions of the
lower-producing one since it is easier to clean up, but not all scientists
agree.
The plan should take full effect by 2018, when only one third of
the mercury produced today would be acceptable.
There are currently five
coal-fired power plants in the state of Montana.
