Nevada Gold Mines "Gold Mine" for Mercury Emissions
February 14, 2007
A University of Nevada Report states that the mercury found in the air outside Nevada gold mines is the highest concentration in any air in the U.S. AThis report, "Mercury Air Concentrations in Northern Nevada" found that no other samples of ambient air int he U.S. reflected such high mercury concentrations.
The samples that reflected these toxic levels were taken in August of 2006. The report recommends more monitoring of the air around the mines to make an exact dtermination of the danger it poses to people who live and work in the area. Currently, mercury regulations in Nevada require one time monitoring of mercury concentrations around plants once to make sure they aren't overproducing mercury. Continuous monitoring of these emissions is not required.
