Newport Beach - Mercury Find Complicates Harbor Permits
September 27, 2006
Although only a small amount was found, officials
in Newport Beach are concerned over the recent discovery of mercury in the
water.
The mercury was discovered during a routine analysis of sediment,
the standard procedure done when trying to attain a dredging permit. Officials
see a cause for concern, despite the minimal amounts, because before now there
has never been any mercury in the area.
According to Daily Pilot,
"Mercury was found in three areas: two spots in the west Lido channel and
one by 15th Street on the Balboa Peninsula." Additionally, "Only a small amount
of mercury was detected, and in further tests it didn't show up in marine
animals, so it would likely have a minimal effect — if any — on the
environment."
