April 9, 2007
A new mercury ban in Ohio will mainly affect schools.
House Bill 443 was passed last year by Ohio legislature. It was It is geared
towards the eventually complete phasing out of mercury based thermometers and
adding devices currently used in schools. Since mercury air emissions can have
such a damaging effect other, more easily controlled, sources of mercury should
be eliminated.
Because most schools have stopped using mercury
thermometers and mercury-added measuring devices this bill will not have a major
impact on science and math classes in Ohio. Also prohibited are the sale and
distribution of mercury-containing thermometers and novelty items. This section
of the bill will be enacted on October 6, 2007. This law is drafted so that
exceptions to the rule can be made in certain circumstances.
