Oregon - Mercury collected at area dairies
October 24, 2006
Manometers, devices that measure the pressure in
automated milking equipment, are infrequently used anymore in dairy farming. The
state of Oregon, however, has instituted a rebate program since they contain the
dangerous pollutant mercury.
Although the mercury does not affect milk,
it does still have an affect on the environment if broken.
The
Department of Environmental Quality has reported 38 turned in manometers.
