Tennessee Plant Honored by Reducing Mercury Emissions

The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health
Administration program honored plants for their 2006 efforts regarding reducing
mercury emissions and protecting employee health. The Olin facility was honored
in 2006 by being selected as a Voluntary Prevention Program Star Site. The site
engaged in using new experimental technology geared towards reducing mercury
emissions. The new technology reduced mercury emissions 60 percent less than
January 2006.
Mercury is a major problem in Tennessee. Says The
Cleveland Daily Banner, "Tennessee is posted with warnings regarding mercury
contamination. One is East Fork Poplar Creek in Anderson and Roane counties.
People are advised not to eat the fish or have body contact with the water in
this creek. The North Fork of the Holston River in Northeast Tennessee is also
posted warning people not to eat the fish.”
