New compensation laws for asbestos victims

Victoria, Australia will introduce new compensation laws for workers who develop asbestos-related diseases, according to SafetoWork.com on May 27, 2008.

Under the country's current system, someone with asbestosis who has received an asbestos award may no seek further compensation if the disease develops into mesothelioma or another type of asbestos-related cancer.

According to that government, the new legislation will implement changes to the law.

Using asbestos in Victoria was banned in 2003, but builders and other workers remain at risk of exposure to asbestos when working in buildings that were constructed using asbestos before that time.
