New York ranked No. 3 for mesothelioma
New York mesothelioma. New York state may be No. 1 for international commerce and the performing arts, but it also has the dubious distinction of being the third highest ranking state in the country for asbestos-related deaths, according to a study by the EWG Action Fund, a non-profit environmental research group based in Washington, D.C.
At least 2,626 persons were killed by asbestos poisoning in New York state between 1979 and 2001, according to the study. The report says that figure is a low estimate and could feasibly have exceeded 4,000 deaths due to incomplete death certificate records during the 22-year period.
New Jersey ranked No. 6 for mesothelioma
In New Jersey, State Senator Tom Kean has proposed that his state recognize Mesothelioma Awareness Day in an effort to make sure that lawmakers, cancer researchers and the general public remember the asbestos-related New Jersey deaths that have been recorded.
Between 1979 and 2001, New Jersey ranked No. 6 in the nation for fatalities related to asbestos exposure, with 12 counties recording unusually high numbers of asbestos-related deaths.

Mesothelioma Awareness Day
The first Mesothelioma Awareness Day was held in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 2003. The industrial pollutants generated by the area’s steel mills, coal mines and other plants and factories, and the lung diseases that many of the workers in those facilities suffer prompted a group to approach the Pittsburgh City Council.
The group requested that they recognize Mesothelioma Awareness Day to help let other workers know about the dangerous disease and raise funds to finance treatments and clinical trials for patients.
Supporters chose September 26 to commemorate the wedding anniversary of a patient who died from mesothelioma and his widow, who brought the cause to their attention.
