Asbestos in the News
November 16, 2009 - Researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine are launching a new $5-million study to investigate the effects of vermiculite asbestos mining in the Libby, Mont., area on residents’ health. Asbestos contamination in that region has contributed to a high rate of asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma.
Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University is an American medical school in the borough of Manhattan in New York City.
The school’s Ph.D. program was ranked No. 3 among 53 U.S. institutions in a survey conducted by Academic Analytics in 2008; and No. 7 on the organization’s list of the top 20 specialized research universities in biomedical health sciences.
NYU Medical School researchers go West
Once home to a thriving vermiculite asbestos mine operated by corporate giant W.R. Grace, the residents of Libby have suffered high rates of asbestos diseases for years.
Due to Grace’s mining activities, asbestos contamination in the town has been pervasive, and it has been linked to the deaths of miners, vermiculite workers, their family members, and even the general public who simply live in the area.
Medical authorities acknowledge that asbestos exposure can also occur secondhand, when toxic dust infiltrates the homes of workers. W.R. Grace reportedly donated vermiculite asbestos materials, left over from mining and processing operations, for use in recreational and domestic town areas – where children play.
The Mount Sinai study, headed by Dr. Stephen Levin, will focus on the effects of asbestos on Libby’s children, and assist federal agencies in developing cleanup plans in the state.
Justice through restitution
Mesothelioma is most often the result of occupational asbestos exposure – and usually contracted through employers’ preference for quick profits over the expense of maintaining workplace health safety.
Weitz & Luxenberg has protected the legal rights of asbestos-injured workers since 1986. And in that time the firm's mesothelioma lawyers have won several billion dollars in verdicts and settlements for clients injured by occupational asbestos exposure.
If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma and seek a free case review, please notify us through the communication form on this page. We will pursue your claim with vigilance to help you pay for medical bills, lost wages, and suffering.
