Nevada was no safe haven from asbestos: learn your risk and resources
As Sin City began to grow after 1911 and attract people from all over the country, another element was growing – the asbestos industry. Las Vegas and other surrounding cities in Nevada were booming by the 1960s, and they demanded nothing but the best for this blooming desert flower. This meant bigger signs, better accommodations, and the latest technology. Fireproofing the buildings and insulating machines with asbestos was a must for Nevada. Many locals in the construction and carpentry industries reaped the benefits of the work. Perhaps you or your father was one of them finding steady pay in installing asbestos drywall, or wrapping boilers in asbestos. Only a few knew that asbestos was highly toxic, and they were not about to tell anybody.

How asbestos corporations disregarded the lives of the people of Nevada
Nevada’s motto is written confidently on its state seal. It is a motto of which every American can be proud: All For Our Country. Although not every American behaved in the manner in which this motto implies. For instance, E. A. Martin, the Director of Purchases for Bendix (an asbestos corporation) once wrote in a letter, “if you have enjoyed a good life while working with asbestos products why not die from it.”
The letter was dated in 1966 – years before the general public became aware of the dangers of asbestos (EWG 1).
Johns-Manville (another asbestos company) conducted tests on its own workers to see how harmful working with asbestos really was. 534 employees out of the 780 tested had significant lung changes (Multinationalmonitor). The study was conducted in the 1930s.
Asbestos companies hid the truth about the fatal dangers of asbestos exposure. It is because of their carelessness that you are sick today.
Asbestos deaths in Nevada
An estimated 194 people died from asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer (two prominent asbestos-related diseases) between the years 1979 and 2001.
Clark County had the highest number of deaths by county with an estimated 98 between the given years (EWG 2).
Possible locations of exposure in Nevada
Power plants – there have been many power plants located in Nevada. These establishments are known for containing large amounts of asbestos. Because asbestos if fireproof and insulates well, it is valuable in the production of energy. If you or a family member worked in a Nevada power plant and later developed an asbestos-related disease, contact our firm.
Oil Refineries – asbestos was also used heavily in the construction and maintenance of oil refineries. Often individuals working in the construction or day-to-day operations of oil refineries in Nevada were not given the proper protective gear to protect themselves against toxic asbestos dust.
Las Vegas, Reno, and Bolder City – major metropolitan areas usually contain more asbestos than rural areas because of the volume of pipes and need for electricity. Construction workers, electricians, and plumbers were all at risk of being exposed to asbestos while performing ordinary job duties.
