Asbestos took the lives of hundreds in New Hampshire: where were you when you were exposed?
In the 1800s, as the United States got its foothold in the world, farmlands laid vast in the south and textile plants sprinkled up north. New England was consistently at the forefront of factory work, and mining. In the state of New Hampshire, among the snow and the granite laden paths, relics of a booming industry can still be found. These relics are not buried inside old, abandoned factories. They are in the houses in Amherst, and the apartments of Manchester and Nashua. They are sick and dying people – relics of the once great industrial empire of asbestos.
For many decades, people working in the state of New Hampshire were being poisoned by asbestos without any knowledge that the mineral was even harmful. The only ones who knew were in charge of the asbestos corporations. They knew all along that asbestos could cause fatal diseases such as mesothelioma cancer, lung cancer, or asbestosis. These companies chose to say nothing in order to keep their high profits (EWG 1).

The death toll from asbestos in New Hampshire
An estimated 314 people died from asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer from 1979 to 2001. Hillsborough County, New Hampshire is reported to have the greatest number of deaths by counties in the state between 1979 and 2001.
This was reported by the Environmental Working Group (EWG 2), which also states that asbestos-related deaths are on the rise. Given the years that this report does not cover, the death toll in New Hampshire is expected to be even higher.
Possible locations where you may have been exposed to asbestos
There are many areas in New Hampshire that contained asbestos. Prior to US laws banning certain asbestos products from use in the country, asbestos was as common as sliced bread. Here are just a few possible locations for asbestos exposure.
Mines – At times, asbestos was used for mining equipment. Heavy drills and exhaust fans are just two machines that may have contained asbestos (Llewellynhose). Even though New Hampshire is the home of many mines (City-Data), there were no asbestos mines in New Hampshire. The state is surrounded by Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, which contained several asbestos mines (USGS). Asbestos mining jobs could have been available to residents of New Hampshire willing to commute.
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard – any shipyard established before the year 1970 will most likely contain heavy amounts of asbestos. Anyone working on shipyard or in shipbuilding has a high risk of developing an asbestos-related disease.
Power plants – power plants were notorious for using a great deal of asbestos. Because asbestos is fireproof and an excellent insulator, it was used to improve the performance of the machines, and, ironically, provide a level of safety.
