NEW YORK MESOTHELIOMA
New York: No. 3 state in the nation for asbestos-related mesothelioma
Statistical news on New York mesothelioma.
Weitz & Luxenberg has protected the legal rights of workers harmed by asbestos since 1986. And in that time the firm's mesothelioma lawyers have won several billion dollars in verdicts and settlements for clients injured by job-related asbestos exposure.
The first-ever analysis of federal mortality records finds that 10,000 Americans die each year from asbestos exposure, and projects that up to 10 times that many will die in the next decade, according to a study by the EWG Action Fund, a non-profit environmental research group based in Washington, D.C.
The study details for the first time the death toll in each state and county nationwide for the period between 1979 and 2001.
New York, No. 3 mesothelioma state
New York State may be No. 1 for international commerce and the performing arts, but it also has the dubious distinction of being the third highest ranking state in the country for asbestos-related deaths.
At least 2,626 persons were killed by asbestos poisoning in New York State between 1979 and 2001, according to the study. That figure, says the report, is a low estimate and could feasibly have exceeded 4,000 deaths during this 22-year period.
Long Island is where much of the state’s industry is. Thus, we find that Queens County in New York City is by far the most toxic region in the state, ranking No. 9 on a list of the Top 100 counties in the nation with the greatest incidence of asbestos-related deaths. Suffolk County, also on Long Island, is ranked at No. 21.
Brooklyn ranks at No. 32; Manhattan is No. 82, and the Bronx is No. 90 on the list of the nation’s top 100 counties reporting asbestos deaths.
In the northern part of New York State, the region around Buffalo recorded a high concentration of asbestos cases. For example, Erie County is ranked No. 25, and Onondaga County made the list at No. 98.
Time to seek justice!
The study projects that in the next decade 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. In the United States, mesothelioma accounts for about one quarter of all asbestos fatalities. This disease is most often the result of industrial workplace exposure to asbestos – and is usually contracted through employers’ blatant disregard for health and safety.
That’s why people diagnosed with mesothelioma and surviving family members have strong cases in court. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, please complete the form on this page for a free evaluation of your legal rights. There is no cost to you until we win a settlement or a verdict.
